What is the issue?
Over the last year, Foyer’s giveusachance campaign has been highlighting the need for young people aged 16 – 25 to have access to learning, training, housing and support to help them live as independent adults.
There’s a big demand for Foyer services:
- There are 1.1million young people aged between 16 and 24 in the U.K. who are not in education, employment or training (NEET)
- The 25% of people who drop out of post-16 education in the UK are those least likely to re-enter or get well-paid jobs
- 77,000 young people run away from home every year, predominantly girls. 80% run away because of family problems
- each year, 9,000 young offenders are placed in unsuitable accommodation, such as bed and breakfast
